Thrillers

The book of eli (2009)- By having the sound of wind before you can see what is going on in the scene makes the audience already feel on edge and uneasy. As the audience relax they then die the sound down and then have a loud noise to shock them ( i found this very effective).  Having the camera shot low makes you feel uneasy and builds the suspence as if the only things you were to see would be the bottom half of something you are not quite sure what is happening above. The setting of the beginning is effective as using a dark wood with mist and what looked like ash falling makes you feel like something was lurking in the trees. Hearing the sound of heavy breathing and not much other sound bulids up the tension. I liked the beginning of this film.

Brick (2006) - The sound track to the beginning is good as it gives you a false sence of security as it is high sounding bells and having the high sounding bells is also good as it catches people's attention because it is not what you would normally expect at the beginning of a thriller. Having a point of view shot onto the girl makes you wonder if he has killed the girl or if he has just found the body. Panning across running water and then seeing the girl is a good effect as you have a build up to the moment, the running water bulds the suspense as you are ready for something to happen. Then on the later scene before the accident/murder having the car driving past in the background coming up towards the character when he isnt facing a different way gave alot of action and again builds suspense. The character driving the car flicks a cigarette out the window this is to show the type of person that he/she is (unpleasant)  based on stereotypes.

Gothika (2003) - I found the beginning of this film quite intence. The lighting is dull and gloomy as there is only the light coming from the windows, this makes lots of shadows in the room resulting in not truely being able to see the whole picture. They film from behind a grid to make you feel like you shouldn't be there that you are watching over the event. This makes the audience on edge as you feel wrong to be watching something you feel you shouldn't be and also why are the characters behind bars? This makes you feel as if you need to be protected from something or maybe the people behind the bars need protecting. They use over the shoulder shots when the two characters are talking so you can see the emotion and how well the person responds to a question or how they act. There is a shot of the character who was seen to be crazy, of her talking about slicing her dads adams apple in half but as they move to the shot of her you can see a tear on her face showing that the character is actually quite vunerable and maybe some of what she is saying could be true.

In my opinion I found that I liked The book of eli's beginning the best as I thought that is had good suspence and had some action but not to much to confuse you.

  1. Good work Daisy. You refer to camera angles and movement well. Try to talk about thriller conventions a little more.
